Rosacea generally makes the individual’s face seem like it was flushing or blushing, but it is really inflamed. An estimated 14 million Americans suffer from rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha), which is often mistaken for adult acne, eczema, or an allergic reaction.

Symptoms can be a redness and swelling of the face (with a frequently detected “butterfly pattern”). There are usually small, pus-filled bumps, like pimples, and dilated or broken blood vessels. Half of those it afflicts also experience inflamed, red, and itching eyes.

Most patients are Caucasian, 30 to 50 years old, and female (especially if menopausal). There is no test for rosacea and the majority of those with it have a mild form and are never formally diagnosed. They often just cover up the redness with powder cosmetics (a green tone and matte finish are best).

The causes of rosacea are not fully understood. A study by the National Rosacea Society analyzed blood samples of those with the problem and found that the bacteria Bacillus oleronius, associated with the presence of an increased number of mites. This triggered an immune response in 79% of those with rosacea, compared with 29% of those without it. This resulted in inflammation with bumps and pimples.

Another study showed that small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO) occurred more often in those with rosacea. The small lesions improved with antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics were also helpful with those whose cases were associated with high levels of the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin and elevated stratum corneum tryptic enzymes.

Rosacea

It is well-known that spicy food, dairy products, alcohol, dairy products, and hot drinks (caffeine’s role is controversial) often trigger rosacea reactions. Intense exercise, hot or cold weather, hot baths and showers, or moving from a cold to a warm environment may do the same. Excessive sun exposure is also a trigger, so doctors recommend patients should always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Stress of all kinds can also bring on symptoms.

The National Rosacea Society reported that 70% of sufferers said the condition lowered their self-confidence, with 41% trying to avoid public contact as much as possible.

Although there is no cure, fortunately there are ways to reduce the number and intensity of episodes, alleviating the reddening, inflammatory lesions, itching, tenderness, and the feeling of burning.

Stunning Wellness offers the most sophisticated light therapy for rosacea symptom alleviation, using Viora’s PCR (PulseConfiguRythm) Technology. It is used to treat a wide variety of cases involving excessive pigmentation, vascular lesions, and skin rejuvenation. The V-IPL and V-Nd:YAG handpieces have adjustable pulse configurations for every condition and skin type, allowing us to personalize each session.

Coupled with the cooling system that operates before, during, and after each pulse, the smart heat of our lasers are relatively painless, at most causing some to feel a slight sting. Results will be seen immediately, with gradual improvement. The optimum of sessions recommended can range from one to 10. Call us today to find out how laser therapy, also used in other procedures such as acne treatment and laser hair removal, can improve the quality of your life.
