Laser Hair Removal

One of the most common questions that patients have about laser hair removal is if the results it provides are permanent.

The answer is both yes and no. The vast majority of hairs that are removed with this treatment do not grow back. However, no dermatologist or practitioner can guarantee that results are 100% permanent. The patients who do experience some amount of hair regrowth find that the hair is lighter, finer, and easier to manage than the original hair.

Why isn’t laser hair removal 100% permanent?

It has to do with the stage of growth your hair is in when you come for a treatment. At any given time, about three-quarters of your hair is in what’s known as the growth phase, and it’s this hair that is targeted by laser hair removal. The rest of your hair is either in a resting or transition phase and is not affected by the laser.

This is why we recommend a series of sessions in order to eliminate most or all unwanted hair in a region. The 25% of hairs that the laser was unable to target on the first pass will likely be in the growth stage in subsequent sessions.

Is laser hair removal a good option for me?

In answering this question, you should consider your current grooming methods and whether you’re happy with the results or if you would like to try another option. Many patients find shaving, waxing, and plucking to be time-consuming and a hassle because of the ingrown hairs, breakouts, and bumps that frequently occur with these methods of hair removal.

Laser hair removal effectively eliminates up to 90% of unwanted hair in the treated areas, offering a solution that many prefer to other hair removal methods that require ongoing maintenance as the hair grows back.

How long will it take for me to see the results I want?

The general time frame for effective laser hair removal is four to six sessions paced out over the course of one year. At the end of the treatment, you no longer have to devote time or money to managing the hair growth in the treated area.

Is there anything I can do to avoid or minimize the possibility of the hair growing back?

No. Hair regrowth following laser hair removal depends on a few factors, none of which are under the patient’s control. Those factors include:

  • Skin tone
  • Hair color and thickness
  • The area that is treated

However, it’s important to keep in mind that laser hair removal is highly effective and provides excellent results for most patients, regardless of the above factors.
